Taking Standardized Tests during a Mountain School Semester
What tests can I take while at the Mountain School?
While there are many colleges and universities in the United States that do not require standardized testing as part of the admissions process, it is generally advisable for students to take either the SAT or ACT, as it keeps the greatest number of opportunities open to them.
We encourage students to discuss a testing plan with their families and school counselor prior to arriving at the Mountain School. Many students will take the PSAT in fall of 11th grade, and their first SAT or ACT in the spring. This allows students time to receive their scores, continue studying if necessary, and test again in the summer before 12th grade should they want to.
The Mountain School offers the PSAT on-campus in the Fall and the ACT on-campus in the Spring. We are able to arrange travel to nearby sites in a limited capacity.
Students are responsible for registering for the SAT and/or ACT, and should pay close attention to College Board and ACT deadlines.
While the Mountain School does offer AP exams on-campus in May, TMS students are not required to take them. If you would like to take any AP exams, you must be in touch with our testing coordinator before November, even if you’re not attending until Spring Semester, to make sure that you’re correctly registered. Read more below about registering AP exams.
How will TMS support me with taking these tests?
The Mountain School supports students who choose to take these exams by providing transportation to the appropriate nearby exam center.
In addition, all students will have the opportunity to take the PSAT exam on The Mountain School campus during the fall semester.
Please remember that you are responsible for registering any exam (other than the PSAT) you would like to take, and all College Board or ACT deadlines apply.
What test dates are available?
For the 2024-2025 school year, students should plan for…
…the PSAT: The PSATs are administered on campus during the fall semester. Students will register for this while at the Mountain School. As of 2023, the College Board requires students to take a digital version of the exam; please be sure to review the requirements for digital test taking on the College Board website and download the necessary technology before you arrive on campus.
…the SAT: Students who want to take the SAT should register for the exam taking place on November 2nd, 2024 at Hanover High School in Hanover, NH (Center Code 30160). We will provide transportation to and from the test. Students who want to take the SAT in the spring of 2025 should register for the exam taking place on May 3rd, 2025 at Hanover High School in Hanover, NH (Center Code 30160). …AP: The AP exams will be administered on campus during the month of May. When we have more information, we will provide the date range for the AP exams to be administered - Please check back.
How can I register for the SAT or ACT?
We recommend students register for SAT &/or ACT tests before coming to the Mountain School. You can do so online at www.collegeboard.com (SAT) or www.act.org (ACT).
Please use the information listed below when registering to test while you’re at The Mountain School:
Use your own school’s code for the “high school code” for all tests. This is the code for the school to which test scores will be sent.
Use your home address as the street address.
Use the appropriate center code listed above.
If you have any questions about the registration process, please reach out to our Testing Coordinator at Holly.Shore@mountainschool.org
How can I register for an AP exam?
We offer AP exams on-campus in May of each year, but you should be in touch with our testing coordinator before November (even if you’re not attending until Spring Semester) to make sure that you’re correctly registered.
We offer standard AP Exam registration associated with Mountain School AP courses (e.g. AP US History, AP Calculus, AP Spanish, etc.). We also offer an “AP EXAM ONLY” registration option for course subjects for which we do not offer an AP course (e.g. AP Literature and Composition, AP Psychology, AP Environmental Science, etc.).
Students planning to take an AP Exam associated with a Mountain School AP course in which they will be enrolled in the spring can enroll in their exam by March 1, 2025 using the appropriate Mountain School join code.
If you are planning an “AP EXAM ONLY” registration associated with AP course(s) that you are taking at your home school, and will not be enrolled in these courses at TMS, we ask that you enroll in your exam with the appropriate Mountain School join code by November 10, 2024 at the latest. Registering after the November deadline will incur a late fee from the College Board.
Please visit the College Board website for more detailed information.
If you have any questions about testing, registration, or transportation for off-campus testing, please contact our Testing Coordinator at Holly.Shore@mountainschool.org.
If you are unsure about how to enroll for your exam, you can find a quick and easy tutorial video HERE.
Below is a list of join and transfer codes for many of the most common exams that students take while they are here at the Mountain School. If you are planning on taking an exam that is not listed below, please write to info@mountainschool.org and we will send along the codes for that exam.
